We left the city on the morning boat,
So we could feel the water running under us,
and as the white bay faded as the gulls reeled high,
we had One tea chest and our first-born child.
We left the city that had built my blood
And it rushed through me like a river in flood.
We left the city were my father died,
They drew a sheet on him just before i arrived.
We left the city where I fell in love,
Throwing petrol bombs on the harbour walls,
Just to watch the concrete burn,
Just to prove that we were young.
We left the city choked in memory,
Where baby Jesus walked amongst us through the apple trees.
Where the walls whispered stories, every closet full,
Where the Catholics ruled where the Catholics ruined.
Where every street held a name held a moment held my breath.
Where the rain was a comfort like the voice of a friend.
I found you and you found me,
We'll take April to the southern sea.

We wrote up our treaty of rights,
we wrote it in blood, we wrote it in lights,
we wrote it in chalk on the old water tower,
the council they came, and they hosed it down
cause they like it grey
it matches that way.
We went to war in the 25th year of our lives,
the gutters ran red and our mothers turned grey overnight,
they brought 15 legions to call,
they told us what we could kill and die for,
they told us the rules,
the good and bad news.
And as the ticker tape rained,
down on me,
police they constrained,
every felony,
in my memory.
The peace came around when our rating began to slide,
we just couldn’t compete with the sit-com repeats after nine.
We packed up our camouflaged things,
we gave Christmas cards to our enemies,
the drink prices changed,
and weekdays felt strange.
And as the ticker tape rained
down on me
police they constrained
every felony, in my memory.
They gave us all badges of tin,
and counsellors we,
could confide in.
But they always said the same things anyway,
your ticks area common response to the strain
take these and you’ll sleep,
can I see you next week.
