about

Here is a review from rave magazine

For Bread And Circuses is a rich musical tapestry that showcases the considerable song-writing talent of local troubadour Timothy Carroll. Swooning effortlessly between simple, string-soaked ballads and soulful organ laments, Carroll rides his acoustic guitar through an antique story of lost love. Emotive vocal melodies and lyrics blend tones of Conor Oberst and Damien Rice with the simple Australian honesty of Bob Evans. The dry and wry break-up duet, Something Else, is a real lyrical standout, dwelling meaningfully on the little things in love we all take for granted. Recorded on authentic ribbon mics and tape machines, the album has a beautiful, timeless feel. Carroll’s vintage audacity creates a haunting fog of folk, country and soul that simmers in the cigar smoke of the ‘40s. With its distinctive, lush feel, For Bread And Circuses is a promising step forward for yet another flowering Brisbane singer-songwriter.

about

Carroll’s next record sees him teaming up with increasingly reclusive producer Matt Redlich (Hungry Kids Of Hungary, Ball ... more Park Music) and pushing towards a heavier pallet of electric tones. The record is influenced by the dueling guitar lines of Neil Young and driving melodies of acts such as The Cure and the Smiths. less
